Literal mode treats a.b as three exact characters; regex mode treats the dot as a wildcard except line terminators. With source Cat cat, search cat and replacement dog, defaults give dog dog. Case sensitive gives Cat dog; First only with case sensitivity off gives dog cat. Replacement rules apply in both search modes: $& inserts the matched text and $$ inserts one dollar sign. In regex mode, (cat) with $1s produces cats. To insert a literal $& instead, use $$&. Searching substrings can also change parts of longer words; review the output and keep the original.
Limits: input 500000 UTF-16 code units; pattern 256 units after literal escaping; replacement and output 1000000 units each. Regex execution is limited to 1500 ms in a worker. A literal search full of metacharacters can therefore exceed the pattern limit before 256 typed characters. Empty search and invalid regex are errors. Enter patterns without /.../ delimiters; flags come from the checkboxes. The source input is not overwritten.
