Unicode Letter and Code Point Counter

Count Unicode letters and code points, with optional space and number filters. Emoji sequences can contain several code points.

Unicode Letter and Code Point Counter

The page counts Unicode characters from one text area. Both the whitespace and Unicode numeric-character options are off initially, so whitespace and characters in the Unicode Number category are removed before the main count.

Letters and writing characters are counted with the Unicode Letter category, which includes alphabetic scripts beyond English. Punctuation, symbols and emoji are not included in that letter total.

Processed character count counts Unicode code points after the selected removals, while original character count counts code points in the untouched input. These figures can differ from user-perceived grapheme clusters for combined accents, emoji sequences and some complex scripts.

For 'Hello 123!', the defaults report 5 letters, 6 processed code points because the exclamation mark remains, and 10 original code points. Enabling numbers raises the processed count and includes 1, 2 and 3, but they still are not letters.

All counting is browser-local. The tool does not calculate words, bytes, UTF-8 storage, reading time or typography-specific glyph counts.

Input is limited to 500,000 UTF-16 code units. Supplementary characters such as 😀 use two units each; this limit is not a 500,000-code-point allowance.

Processing takes place locally in your browser.
