What Online Image Emboss Tool actually does

Applies an adjustable directional emboss to one image. Emboss strength ranges 0..100 percent and defaults 50; angle ranges 0..359 degrees and defaults 45. Reverse emboss is off by default and Grayscale desaturation is on. There is no custom kernel, light-height, depth map or selected-region control.

Checkable example

If Grayscale is selected, the blended result is converted using 0.299R+0.587G+0.114B. With a 3 by 3 grayscale ramp 0..8, the center convolution at 45 degrees is 148; default 50 percent Emboss strength blends source 4 and filter 148 to 76. Reverse produces 108 before blending and 56 at 50 percent.

Controls, output and limits

Angle is rounded to the nearest 45 degrees to select one of eight fixed 3 by 3 kernels. Reverse negates every coefficient. RGB is convolved independently with nearest-border sampling and a bias of 128, then blended with the source according to Emboss strength and clamped to 8-bit values; alpha and dimensions remain unchanged.

One browser-decodable image up to 25 MiB (26 214 400 B) and 24,000,000 pixels is accepted. Press Generate image after changing Emboss strength, angle or checkboxes. Output is PNG using the source base plus -emboss.png; the browser-local workflow does not preserve the original file format.

The result visually suggests raised or recessed edges but does not calculate real surface depth, normals or lighting. High amount can clip tones and highlight noise. Keep the original, compare reverse and angle choices on the actual subject, and inspect the downloaded PNG before use.
